Council-wide Service Project for April: Animals

Service Project Ideas

  • Contact your nearest Humane Society or Wildlife Center and ask what volunteer needs they may have. Suggestions may include:
    ~ dog walker (check on age limit) or to interact/play with animals
    ~ feeding animals
    ~ cleaning cages
    ~ toy or food collection
    ~ bathing, brushing, cleaning animals
    ~ make posters or flyers advertising their needs and distribute them to the community
    ~ general clean-up
    ~ donate homemade treats (that you have made)
  • Create and donate catnip toys to an animal shelter. Visit www.operationhappysock.com, where you will find information on Operation Happy Sock Info Kit, a non-profit project for turning socks into catnip toys.
  • Host an educational workshop for younger Girl Scouts or kids at school about:
    ~ how to care for a pet.
    ~ making a house safe for pets.
    ~ cooking class for pet treats.
    ~ what to consider when looking to get a pet.
    ~ proper training for tricks or basic commands.
    ~ why you should spay/neuter your pet and the problem of stray animals.
  • Check with a Senior Center to see if you can bring your pets in to visit with the seniors.
  • Volunteer to assist elderly or shut-ins who have pets in your neighborhood, church, or community with walking and exercising or caring for the pets.
  • Work with younger girls to make bird feeders or bat houses.
  • Plant and care for a neighborhood garden to attract butterflies or birds.
  • Participate in a bird or wildlife count.

Related Programs/Badges

Remember: if one of the requirements for a recognition is to do a service project, the girls cannot do the same service project for the Great Blue Heron Service pin. The girls can also earn the recognition by completing the required number of activities without the service activity.
