Council-wide Service Projects for September:
Support Your Hometown Heroes

SERVICE PROJECT IDEAS

Hometown Heroes are all around: police, sheriff, and fire departments; volunteers who help with the PTO, Red Cross or coaching sports; veterans who have already served our country; service personnel who are currently serving our country in every branch of the military (including National Guard and reserve units); people who protect you in school, your neighborhood, your community. Some volunteer, some get paid, but they all CARE about the people around them and want to make things better.

Have you thanked them lately? Do you know what they do or did to help others?

  • Send “Thank You” cards/notes (or take treats) to the local police/sheriff and fire stations to thank them for protecting your neighborhood.
  • Spend time with veterans. Find out what it was like to serve their country.
  • Call the local veterans’ hospital and ask if there is something that the veterans need. Can you fill that need? (Collecting toiletries, slippers, etc.)
  • Is there someone in your troop/neighborhood who has a family member currently serving in the military? How can you help them? Send a letter? Mail a care package? Help their family at home to keep up with the yard work, exercise a pet or watch small children.
  • Thank the people who protect your school and all the students in it.
  • Ask your local fire or police/sheriff station how you can help them – do they distribute teddy bears or other toys to children in stressful situations? Can you collect those items for them?
  • What can you do to help your school’s adult hall monitors/D.A.R.E officers to keep everyone safe and aware? (Make posters to help others learn school rules, etc.)
  • Does the local police/sheriff’s department sponsor an anti-drug program for children? Show your support by participating. Are you able to help them prepare materials for school visits? Do they need assistants when presenting?
  • Thank every adult you know who volunteers their time somewhere!
  • Find out more about the Red Cross. Where are they currently volunteering? What do they need to help people in disaster areas? Can you help them collect it? Do they have another need you can help with?
  • Why not show those in the military that you respect and care about what they have done to serve our country by collecting tattered and torn flags in your neighborhood/community and holding a flag retirement ceremony. Contact the Outdoor Program Manager for directions on a proper flag retirement ceremony.
