Service Project Ideas

  • Collect school supplies for the Waukesha County Back Pack Coalition. Provides needed backpacks and school supplies to struggling families so they may have a successful start to the new school year. Girl Scouts - Great Blue Heron Council has supported this effort for several years, including collecting items at many day camps. Here is a list (in pdf format) for you to download and take to the store.
  • Hold a used book sale and donate the money to a literacy group.
  • Collect used books to give to a hospital children’s wing, waiting area, nursing home, shelter, preschool, day care center or Head Start Program.
  • Read aloud to a person who is visually impaired.
  • Contact your local library to see how you can volunteer.
  • Read a book aloud to record it on a cassette tape and donate to a nursing home or center for the visually impaired.
  • Organize a reading hour for children in your neighborhood.
  • Make your own books that teach basic concepts (math, manners, safety, etc.) and then donate them to a preschool program, kindergarten class, Head Start program.
  • Make simple reading and math flash cards for a preschool or day care center.
  • Tutor other people to help improve their reading ability.
  • Teach another person a language you know.
  • Offer to repair books in a church, day care, school or nature center library.
  • Use your allowance to purchase a book for a church, day care, school or nature center library.

RELATED PROGRAMS/BADGES

Remember if one of the requirements for a recognition is to do a service project, the girls cannot do the same service project for the Great Blue Heron Service pin. The girls can also earn the recognition by completing the required number of activities without the service activity.
