Any service project completed this month and related to this month's theme will count as a council wide service project for the Great Blue Heron Pin.

 

 

Council-wide Service Projects for February:
Women's Health

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death among women. Educating girls about the health risks women face (heart attacks, breast cancer, osteoporosis, etc.) and what they can do to develop a healthy lifestyle now can help to lower their risk in the future.

Resources

The following local organizations are prepared to help you with project ideas that will best meet their needs.

  • Waukesha Memorial Hospital - Call Cheryl at 262/928-2734 for volunteer opportunities and ideas.
  • Women’s Shelter in Waukesha - Call 262/547-4600 for volunteer opportunities and ideas.
  • American Heart Association www.americanheart.org (lists local resources, education information, etc.)

Service Project Ideas

  • Decorate a waiting room at a local hospital – with permission from the hospital before.
  • Make care baskets for women in a local shelter, hospital or those receiving long-term health care- cancer patients, women recovering from a heart attack or stroke.
  • Write inspirational cards for women in medical treatment (chemotherapy, etc.) or at a shelter.
  • Collect toiletry items for women and donate to a local shelter.
  • Make tray favors for women who are hospitalized.
  • Have a Valentine's Day party at a local shelter or hospital.
  • "Adopt" a woman receiving long-term care and regularly visit or shop for her. Play games, read to her if need be, assist in any way you can.
  • Make birthday cards and boxes for women in a shelter or hospital.
  • Educate your community, families, etc. of the importance of staying healthy and on a particular disease. (Collect information from your local hospital or a national organization and hand out pamphlets or flyers, conduct a short program.)
  • Go shopping, put away the groceries and make a meal for an ill or elderly woman in your community. Be sure to consider her dietary needs, health.
  • Paint (or furnish) a room at a women's shelter.

Remember: if one of the requirements for a recognition is to do a service project, the girls cannot do the same service project for the Great Blue Heron Service pin. The girls can also earn the recognition by completing the required number of activities without the service activity.
